SCHOOL FROM MALTA WINS 1ST EUROPEAN-WIDE FLICK THE SWITCH ENERGY SAVING COMPETITION!
Malta, 25 May 2010.

St. Francis School Cospicua from Malta has won the European Flick the Switch Champion award during the official closing ceremony that was held on Friday 21st May 2010 in Rakvere, Estonia for the best achievements in organising activities related to energy saving and teaching their pupils to switch off lights and electrical devices when not in use.

Flick the Switch is a European-wide initiative supported by the Intelligent Energy Europe programme (IEE). Over 850 schools and some 100,000 students from all over Europe took part in the Flick the Switch project and St. Francis School stood out with their activities that were organised as part of the campaign. In Malta 65 schools and 12,000 students participated in the Flick the Switch campaign; and in Cyprus 35 schools and 7000 students were involved.

The closing ceremony in Estonia marked the end of the energy saving campaign across European schools, which has run from October 2009 until May 2010. Two schools from Malta which were the Flick the Switch regional winners, namely St. Francis School Cospicua and Kullegg San Benedittu Sekondarja Subien Kirkop, were present during the closing ceremony in Estonia. They were both awarded for their achievements towards energy efficiency with the official Flick the Switch regional energy saving champion flag. Following the awards for the regional winners, St. Francis School Cospicua was also awarded the European Flick the Switch European Champion award at primary school level, and received the official Flick the Switch winning plaque to honour their outstanding achievements during this campaign.

Over the course of the project the campaign has resulted in over 16,800 tonnes of CO2 emissions being saved in schools and well over 24,000 tonnes in European households. The Flick the Switch project is being organised by a consortium of 11 European organizations, and is part-funded by the European Commission’s Intelligent Energy Europe programme. The local partner responsible for Flick the Switch in Malta is Projects in Motion Ltd. (www.pim.com.mt) and Ekoskola Malta.
