The current Intelligent Energy – Europe programme builds on the experience of the first IEE programme undertaken during 2004-2006. This programme has become the main Community instrument to tackle non-technical barriers to the spread of the efficient use of energy and greater use of new and renewable energy sources. In order to contribute to achieving the objectives of EU energy policy and to implementing the Lisbon Agenda, starting from 2007 the IEE has been included in the overarching Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme. The programme’s objectives reflect the following policy communications and legislation:
To contribute to ensuring secure, sustainable energy for Europe, while enhancing European competitiveness, the IEE pillar will encourage the wider uptake of new and renewable energies and improve energy efficiency, and shall foster compliance with our energy regulatory framework.
